There is a place near to where I live called Canewdon. It is named after King Canute (as we now call him) bu whose real name was Cnut. I don't know if you have heard the legend but he was the King who the ancient Danes and Saxons thought had magical powers. To prove he didn't he made his subjects put him in front of the ocean and he said if I have magical powers then I shall be able to turn back the tide. Of course he didn't.

canute, the great...from his reign i remember the tale of lady godiva and a tailor called tom, the original peeping tom, who became blind for looking at her (quite complimentary!!though)...but i didn't know about this legend..so interesting!
