Kafka? is more no than yes.. ...i like his almost surrealist humour, to call it somehow, in the metamorphosis and Josephine, the singer.
because of his very formal writing style, complex to translate and his personality quite tormented and dissatisfied, his books are heavy, no prone to sentimentalisms. i don't really like to 'dive' into his stories as i do with a big variation of others (Borges, Cortazar, Orwell, Auster..) but... these days i am in the mood for re-reading italo calvino.....so refreshing compared to franz! :-)
i found kafka to be a bit overated. much prefer haruki murakami or orwell. i love keep the aspidistra flying. to be honset i haven't read the authors that you mention. i did read some marquez which i liked.
i am glad you said it for me: overrated. it is a bit like Marquez with One Hundred Years of Solitude, i couldn't get passed the thirstiest page with all respect...i much prefer his Chronicles of an Announced Death or some other ones. check Julio Cortazar out..his masterpiece is Hopscotch, quite peculiar!
